On your marks, get set, and read 4 868 books at Kraggies

Ms Melanie van der Hyde had to wear her pyjamas to school because her class read more than 4 000 books since the beginning of the year.

A deal is a deal and reading one book after the other to see your teacher wearing pyjamas to school is motivation enough to read more.

Ms Melanie van der Hyde from Laerskool Kragbron had to go to school in her pyjamas on September 30 after her class read 4 868 books since the beginning of the year.

That averages 211 books per learner in the grade three class. Research shows that learners who read books regularly from a young age develop large vocabularies.

It is also no secret that slipping away into a good story will drain away all your stress and helps you relax.

“It is the first time in 33 years as a teacher that I teach a class that reads so much. To say I am proud is an understatement,” Ms Van der Hyde said.
