The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Busi Shiba is urging Mpumalanga residents to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming local government elections.

Elections are decided by the people who vote. If you do not vote, someone else will decide for you.

South African local government elections will be held on November 1, to elect councils for all metropolitan, district, and local municipalities in each of the country’s nine provinces. Municipal elections are held every five years and this will be the sixth municipal election since the dawn of democracy.

“All South African citizens over the age of 18 who are registered voters will be allowed to vote. On election day you can only vote at the voting station in the voting district (VD) where you registered on the voters’ roll and you must have a bar-coded ID. If you don’t have an ID, you can get a temporary replacement ID called a temporary identity certificate which can also be used to vote with if it has not yet expired,” Shiba said.

The MEC also thanked the citizens of the province for ensuring that they were registered and that their names appeared on the voters’ roll following the September 18 and 19 registration weekend.

“Let us all exercise our democratic rights by voting,” added Shiba.
