A shocking video went viral on social media of a man jumping to his death from the OR Tambo Road bridge (Geduldbrug) crossing the N4 highway.
The incident happened on Friday, November 5 at about 12:15.
Witbank SAPS has confirmed that it was a suicide as the man allegedly told some contract workers doing maintenance on the bridge, that he has personal problems and was about to jump from the bridge.
“The workers tried to talk him out of it, and one of them immediately contacted the police. Seconds after our officers’ arrival on the scene, the man jumped from the bridge,” said Witbank Police Station spokesperson Capt Eddie Hall.
Capt Hall said that there is no evidence of any crime committed before the man jumped.
The driver of a Kia Picanto that was travelling towards Pretoria was, unfortunately, part of this ordeal when he hit the man who was lying in the road.
The driver luckily did not sustain any injuries, but his vehicle was badly damaged.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver as standard procedure.
The deceased has not been identified, and police are urging anyone with information to locate the family to come forward.
“The deceased was wearing a blue t-shirt, black trousers, green and black ‘tekkies’ and has a tattoo of a hand on his right shoulder,” Capt Hall added.
If anyone has information they can contact the investigating officer, Sgt GM Zitha on 078 594 2783 or 013 655 5044.
