Youth unemployment around the city of eMalahleni
The mining industry alone contributes 8.1% of the country’s total GDP, and a huge portion of that pecentage comes from the city of Emalahleni

It is an honor and privilege to pen down this article to table some of the issues which are currently facing the youth in the city of eMalahleni.
Emalahleni is the economic hub of South Africa, it is known as the city of ‘Coal’.
It is of no doubt that the mining industry positively benefit in the centre stage of the economy of South Africa.
The mining industry alone contributes 8.1% of the country’s total GDP, and a huge portion of that pecentage comes from the city of Emalahleni.
With that being said the mining sector in the city of eMalahleni should prioritize the residents of eMalahleni, especially the youth, black and white.
It is because the youth is deprived of many opportunities in the city, not just in the mining sector, but also on government level.
There’s a general sense of nepotism and favoritism for one to emerge in a government post.
Not until such elements are totally eradicated, the levels of unemployment in the city will continue to rise.
Though we know and acknowledge that it is not the role of the government to create jobs, government its there to provide a conducive environment for private capital to provide jobs.
But as things stands the policies that our government adopted does not empower the youth in any way.
The government of Emalahleni Municipality should work hand in glove with the private sector.
The surrounding mines, industries and huge companies should contribute a certain percentage towards the socio-economic development of eMalahleni and to nurture skills and talent at a premature level.
The private sector in the city should each and every year adopt progressive and talented students from various institutions of higher learning in the city and offer them training in a form of internships and possibly permanent jobs.
To totally eradicate poverty and unemployment in the city, the process of socio-economic development must be effective.
Know and understand that there are three stages in the unemployment process.
There are those without skills, semi-skilled and those with skills, so therefore if any program is to be put in effect, such stages should be the first consideration, therefore a blanket approach will be highly ineffective.
Also the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) should improve from the good work; they are currently doing though it is not enough.
The NYDA should reach and empower as many young people in the city as they should.
They should establish as many forums as they should to educate peoples’ outlooks about the Agency and what it stands for.
To reach many communities in the city and townships, mostly where most of these youth needs the information of the Agency and what it stands for.
It is because there are a lot of young entrepreneurs in the city, with high potential of being successful business individuals, but they lack the capacity and information in starting and running their own successful businesses.
The board of NYDA in the city should as well educate peoples’ outlooks further more on the significance of township economy.
As part of training, these young entrepreneurs should be given the necessary material and proper information by the Agency, to equip them in taking over the township economy which will symbolize the destruction of poverty and unemployment in our city, precisely in our townships where poverty and unemployment struck the most.
As part of challenging the levels of unemployment in the city, the surrounding mines working hand in glove with NYDA and Emalahleni Municipality, as part of socio-economic development as well.
Young people who are willing to be innovative should be given the necessary support in terms of placing resources in their disposal. Young people who are struggling to have a startup capital to fund their businesses.
The mines and other huge industries and companies in the city should fund these young people through NYDA and also given that they have a sound business proposal.
With all these measures put in place, unemployment in the city will be a thing of the past.
