Breast cancer awareness bring hope

The event was held in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

During the breast cancer awareness campaign, it was highlighted that cancer can be beaten.
As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is an annual campaign to raise awareness of this complex disease.
Each year, individuals, businesses, and communities come together to show their support for the many people affected by breast cancer.
Stakeholders came together to raise awareness, offer support and highlight the importance of early detection and treatment at an event held at Witbank Hospital on Thursday, October 26.
It was also highlighted that breast cancer affects countless lives each year and it’s essential that not only the medical aspects but also the financial challenges that come with this battle are addressed.

Ms Greama Khoza a breast cancer survivor related her story of how she survived.

In her message of support, Dr Nozipho Zulu said that it was important that the disease is detected early for doctors to treat breast cancer and that regular screening and testing make it easier for doctors to treat breast cancer.
She also mentioned that breast cancer affects both men and women and highlighted the high-risk groups.

“There are many factors associated with breast cancer risk. Factors include genetics and age, which you can’t change. But you can change other breast cancer risk factors, such as smoking cigarettes, not exercising enough, and eating unhealthy food by making healthier lifestyle choices. Research done recently also indicates that there is a connection between breast cancer and HIV. If one suspects to have the disease one does not even need a prescription letter, you just explain and you will be seen by a doctor,” said Dr Zulu.

She also explained the steps taken once one has been diagnosed with the disease, monitoring, treatment, watching for signs of recurrence and the support given.

She encourages family members and partners to offer support to people who have been diagnosed with the disease.
Ms Greama Khoza a breast cancer survivor related her story and how they have now formed a support group, Sinqobile Breast Cancer Survivors. The group members are Naniwe Sibeko, Nqobile Mahlobo, Sifiso Zulu and Apostle Nchabeleng Lentsoalo.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, She also indicates that they are always available to offer support to any cancer patients or any survivors as the journey to healing can be very tough. She also encourages women to take good care of their bodies.
