Ward 21 protest brings N12 to a standstill

The angry Ward 21 residents protest over a cancelled service delivery community meeting.

The residents of Uthingo Park took to the streets over a scheduled community meeting regarding service delivery with the mayor, which was cancelled at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances last night.

The N12 was closed by angry residents on Tuesday, February 6 at around 19:00, who forced coal trucks to block the road inbound and outbound from the Tasbet robots and set tyres ablaze whilst protesting about their grievances with the lack of service delivery and ongoing water and electricity supply issues in their area that they feel were being brushed off by the mayor.

Major traffic jams were observed and reported in the areas leading into Klipfontein and Reyno Ridge as all traffic had to be diverted off the highway.

The protest action remained peaceful due to police presence. The disgruntled residents were dispersed, and the highway cleared by 21:00, although it took many road users hours to get home using alternative routes.

The Ward 21 Community Meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 7 at 17:30 at the T.P. Sililo High School.
