Student death | Here is the Khayalethu Student Residence video

The video shows police entering the Khayalethu Student Residence on Friday, March 8.

This morning saw angry Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students and structures marching to Witbank Police Station demanding justice for a student who died over the weekend.

Engineering student, Thabelo Mbau (25) died in Witbank Hospital on March 9 after an alleged altercation with police at the student residence in the central business district.

CCTV footage shows how police entered the Khayalethu Student Residence on Friday, March 8, and pushed Mbau from inside the residence to the outside.

It is not clear what transpired outside the residence yet.

The Mpumalanga SAPS has confirmed that an investigation has been opened against the police officers who are alleged to be involved in the incident.

Student organisations said they would not stop until the police officers were arrested.

“We demand justice for Thabelo. The police officers must be arrested immediately,” the student structures said in one voice.

The matter had been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation.
