Municipality in the pooh for ‘dumping’ waste in the Olifants River

The matter has been postponed to April 8 for the court to consider some parts of the sentence.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality admitted they are not looking after the water sources.

The entity pleaded guilty to charges related to the National Environmental Act on March 26.

NPA Spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said it is alleged that a tributary of the Olifants River was polluted from 2019 to 2025.

WITBANK NEWS has reported non-stop about raw sewerage flowing into the Steenkoolspruit from the Thubelihle Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), Rietspruit WWTP, Naauwpoort WWTP, and Riverview WWTP.

The complaints were not unheard and an investigation was conducted by the Green and Blue Scorpions from the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, and the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation, respectively.

The municipality entered into a plea and sentence agreement.

Municipal Manager, Sizwe Mayisela commented, “The municipality has already embarked on an action plan to address the untreated effluent and sewer spillages.”
