Family demands answers following the death of a 4-month old baby in Empumelelweni

The baby died this morning after the mother had taken her back to the clinic after she was denied service before presenting the baby’s health card.

A four-month-old baby died earlier this morning in one of the health institutions in Empumelelweni after the mother was allegedly denied service for not providing the baby’s ‘road to health’ card.

According to the mother’s sister, Shereen Mailula, the mom took her child to the clinic in the early hours of May 16, seeking urgent medical attention. However, the nurse allegedly refused to assist the child because the mother didn’t have a ‘road to health’ card with her.

The mother alleged that she was told to return home to fetch the card, and before she could return home where it’s said to be quite a distance from the clinic, she asked the nurse if they could be examining the baby while she fetched the card. The nurse allegedly refused to do so, and the mother took her baby with her to get the card.

Upon return, the mother was allegedly requested to provide some information before her baby could be helped, and the information included her address. The mother mentioned that the nurse allegedly instructed her to take off her baby’s clothes and put the baby on top of the scale. Unfortunately, the baby had already passed on.

The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death have raised questions about the clinic’s policies and procedures. Many are left wondering if the outcome could have been different if the child had received timely medical attention.

This is a developing story.
