From streets to success – Rose becomes mother of nations

Be the change that you want to see – Meet Rose Mokwena, also known as ‘Gogo Mokwena’ a passionate and determined individual who has dedicated her life to transforming her community.

Gogo Mokwena founded a non-profit organisation called Khona Foundation in 2023.

Gogo Mokwena’s journey started after she observed the area around her and found that the streets were dirty and children had nowhere to play. This woke up her sense of responsibility to take action and make a change.

Moved by the state of her community, Gogo Mokwena approached the municipality with a proposal to renovate an old park to utilise it with the children.

Her determination paid off, and the park was transformed into a vibrant space for children to play and learn. The park has become a hub of activity, providing a safe and welcoming environment for kids to engage in various activities and sports.

Gogo Mokwena didn’t stop there. She took it upon herself to lead by example, picking up trash and keeping her streets clean. Her efforts weren’t for nothing; children who had nowhere to play now have a safe space to run, play, and remain entertained.
The organisation has made nice moves so far, with the children forming a netball team and a soccer team. The kids are not only learning valuable skills, but also learning the power of teamwork and discipline.

She is even spreading her love to the motorists by patching potholes around Tasbet Park.

Gogo Mokwena is reaching out to potential sponsors and donors to support her organisation’s continued growth and success.

“Khona Foundation requests help and support in maintaining the park and roads. It also hosts events during national holidays, so we request refreshments. For sports, we request any form of support, either soccer jerseys, balls, cones, and other stuff. We need netball poles and gear,” said Gogo Mokwena.

With the public’s help, she aims to provide more opportunities for the children, further develop the park, and expand the organisation’s reach.
