Thungela suspended blasting at Khwezela Colliery amid community protests

Thungela Resources Limited suspends blasting operations at Khwezela Colliery for the weekend amid community protests.

Thungela Resources Limited has confirmed the suspension of all blasting operations at its Khwezela Colliery in Clewer, following community protests over disruptions caused by the mine’s activities.

The community had taken to the streets yesterday voicing their concerns and demands.

In response, Thungela has agreed to suspend blasting operations for the entire weekend.

Starting May 27, Thungela’s management will engage in one-on-one discussions with affected households to address grievances and explore sustainable solutions.

“We remain committed to constructive engagement with host communities,” said Hulisani Rasivhaga, Thungela’s Head of Communications.

Community member Mandla Lekholeni expressed relief at the suspension but remains concerned about the future.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what will be brought to the table during the engagement talks,” he said. “My house is among those disrupted by the blasting, and it could collapse anytime. I hope the company takes our concerns seriously and finds a solution.”
