The curtain draws in eMalahleni for Benoni robbers

The trucks loaded with copper were hijacked in Benoni.

A high-speed chase involving a private tracking company and police ended in a shootout on the N4 at the Walter Sisulu turn-off early this morning, leaving one alleged robber dead and another wounded and in custody.

The incident followed the hijacking in Benoni where five trucks loaded with copper were robbed.

According to police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall, a tracking company located the hijacked vehicles near the Balmoral off-ramp, which triggered a pursuit.

The robbers were eventually cornered at the off-ramp.

“During the confrontation, a shootout erupted between the tracking company and the suspects” Hall said.

One suspect was fatally shot, while another sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was arrested by members of the Witbank police.

The injured suspect was taken to a hospital, where he remains under police guard.

In addition to the five trucks, a total of 11 firearms were also reported stolen during the initial hijacking.

Hall confirmed that two of the trucks, along with their copper cargo, have since been recovered – one at the scene of the shootout and a second in Vosman.

A case of attempted murder and possession of stolen property has been opened, and Hall stated that more arrests are possible as investigations continue.
