Carjackings in eMalahleni increase over the weekend

Car hijacking has become an everyday occurrence recently – Make sure your vehicle is locked.

A man reported that a company vehicle was stolen over the weekend. He was picking up his cousin when four unknown assailants approached the car.

Two suspects opened the passenger doors while the other two opened the driver’s doors.

They pointed a firearm at the man and his cousin, demanding their cellphones and telling them to get down on the floor.

The suspects then drove off with the vehicle; no shots were fired.

The victim was unable to report the car as stolen immediately because his phone had been switched off. However, security camera footage from a nearby area shows the unknown suspects.

Captain Eddie Hall, Witbank SAPS spokesperson, said, “Stay aware of your surroundings and be prepared to take action if you sense any danger. Importantly, if something feels wrong, trust your gut feeling and act.”
He advised motorists to install two tracking devices in their vehicles and to park in well-lit areas with plenty of pedestrian traffic rather than in designated, isolated areas.
