One Goal Football Foundation’s primary schools tournament showcases young talent

Throughout the tournament, they aimed to strike a balance between sports and education, while keeping the children away from social issues that affected their age group.

The One Goal Football Foundation recently hosted a successful tournament at Lovelife Sports Ground, where primary school children battled it out for the crown.

The top 16 U14 tournament started on September 23, featuring tough matches in netball, ladies soccer, and boys soccer, and was reduced to eight primary school teams, which continued to fight hard for the wins on October 1.

Samson Mathebula, coordinator for the One Goal Football Foundation, said their aim for the school leagues is to balance between sports and education and develop the kids so that they can grow up knowing that sports doesn’t just end at school, but proceeds even after school.

“We are also trying to keep the children away from the streets to prevent and curb issues such as teenage pregnancy and drug abuse,” Samson said.

After hard-fought battles in the boys’ soccer field, Moruti Makuse Primary School was crowned the soccer champions, followed by Kwa-Guqa Primary School, which came out as the runner-up, and Blackhill Primary School in third place.

In the ladies’ soccer, Siphendulwe Primary School took the crown, followed shortly by Vuma Primary School as the runner-up, and Kromdraai Primary School in third place.

Blackhill Primary School turned the tables on the netball court and took first place, followed by Khonzimfundo Primary School, which was crowned the runner-up of the tournament.

The top three winners took home gold, silver, and bronze medals, and floating trophies for the ladies soccer winners together with the Mdledle T-shirt frame.

“It’s really amazing to see how much talent these children have, and as organisations in eMalahleni, we plan to continue supporting them in whatever way we can,” said Vusi Nkabinde, chairperson for the Ezinambeni LFA development, who also supported the tournament.
