Family still waiting for answers in TUT student Mbau’s death

Questions remain unanswered following the March 2024 death of TUT student Thabelo Mbau, as IPID has yet to provide clarity on the investigation.

Uncertainty continues in the case of the death of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student Thabelo Mbau, following allegations of police brutality last year.

Mbau (25), an engineering student, died in March 2024 after an alleged altercation with police officers at the Khayalethu Student Residence in eMalahleni.

It is alleged that he was dragged from the residence and assaulted by police before being taken to Witbank General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The matter was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigation. However, there has been little communication regarding the progress of the case.

Family spokesperson Arien Khoza said the lack of updates has left the family distressed.

“We don’t know what is happening. There have been no clear updates from authorities,” Khoza said.

The latest update received by WITBANK NEWS was when the case appeared at the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on September 13, 2024, where it was postponed to November 15.

Despite repeated attempts by WITBANK NEWS to obtain comment from IPID, the directorate has remained unreachable.
