Residents on edge following string of armed robberies in Vosman and Hlalanikahle
The public’s cooperation in providing information regarding the known suspects in the Hlalanikahle and Vosman street cases, is crucial
A wave of armed robbery incidents has struck the Vosman Police Station precinct, with multiple reports filed within a single week. These attacks on pedestrians and homeowners all involve firearms.
Victims across the precinct have lost valuable possessions, including cellphones, cash, and in one alarming case, a legally owned firearm. While police confirm that investigations are actively underway, the majority of cases currently have no arrests made. In several instances, the perpetrators are reportedly known within the community.
Suspects are known
On December 7, just after 22:00 a woman walking in Ext 3, Hlalanikahle was confronted by three men, one allegedly armed with a firearm.
She told police she was forcibly tripped, searched, and robbed of her Samsung cellphone and R100 cash.
The woman was later informed that the perpetrators were allegedly two known suspects, who were reportedly seen selling a cellphone matching the description.
No arrest has been made yet, but the suspects are known.
The second incident happened on December 10 on Thabo Mbeki Street in Vosman.
The 39-year-old was accosted by three men while on his way home.
One of the men was allegedly armed.
He told police a firearm was pointed at him, and he was searched.
The robbers took his cellphone and R750 cash.
The man recognised one of the men who held him up.
He traced his phone to the man he recognised, but could not find his phone.
Not even the workplace is safe
The Vodacom tower in Lynnville is the third crime scene.
A man told police he was at the cellphone tower for work purposes on December 11 when two men came toward him and instructed him to get out of his vehicle.
The robbers took off with the man’s wallet and the cellphone tower’s site keys.
Later that same evening, a woman from Ext 14 returned home from work.
“When she entered her house, she was confronted by three men, one allegedly armed with a firearm. They forcefully grabbed her hand and took a paper bag containing shoes, an iPhone, and safe keys before fleeing the scene,” Vosman Police spokesperson Captain Vusi Mnisi said.
Two armed robberies on the same day
The crime spree continued on December 14, when a man was offered a lift from the N4 near KG Mall toward Tshwane.
The 41-year-old victim said there were three people in the white Toyota Corolla Quest. Along the road near Highveld Industrial Park, the occupants had a rude awakening when a gun was pointed at them, and they were robbed of their cellphones, and then thrown out before the suspects drove away.
Later that evening a man was surprised by three men at his home in Hlalanikahle Ext 2.
They stole his firearm from his waist and discharged one shot before disappearing from the scene.
Police appeal for vigilance
With multiple suspects known but no arrests in sight for many cases, the police are urging residents to exercise extreme caution and cooperate with law enforcement.
“We are working tirelessly on these cases. It is vital that our residents remain cautious, especially when walking alone at night or accepting lifts from unknown people,” said Mnisi.
The publics cooperation in providing information, particularly regarding the known suspects in the Hlalanikahle and Vosman street cases, is crucial to ensuring arrests are made.
