SAPS suggests thinking twice before putting yourself in a situation that may pose a safety risk.
A man’s hitchhiking trip turned into an armed robbery, leaving him without his cellphones, wallet, and some money.
According to the police, the incident occurred on January 7 at around 10:30.
The man was at a hiking spot along the R104, trying to hitch a ride, when a car stopped to offer him a lift. He got into the car, which had three men inside, and during the journey, one of them allegedly pointed a firearm at him. Covering his face with a black plastic bag, the robbers demanded his pin and banking details.
After transferring some money from his banking app, they dropped him off along the road and drove away.
A case was opened at Vosman SAPS, and investigations are ongoing.SAPS warns the public against hitchhiking because though it may seem
like a convenient option, it poses a safety risk and great danger.
“Hitchhiking and offering lifts to strangers are dangerous. Think twice before putting yourself in a situation that may pose a safety risk,” SAPS said.“Consider accessible alternatives to hitchhiking. With a little patience, you will often be able to find at least one safe option, such as reliable public transport.”
