Jumbo Mall’s grand opening overshadowed by demonstrators demanding fair job opportunities

Mpumalanga Arising Hope led the demonstration over what they call ‘unfair’ hiring at Jumbo Mall in eMalahleni this morning.

The situation at Jumbo Mall appears to have calmed following this morning’s demonstration.

During the mall’s opening hours, a group of demonstrators was locked outside the gates after protesting the procurement of cleaning and security services.

The group claimed that these service contracts and employment opportunities were not made available to residents from the surrounding community.

It was a rocky start for Jumbo Mall. Instead of shoppers streaming through the doors of the newly built center, the focus was pulled toward a group gathered outside the gates. The protesters were there to voice their dissatisfaction with the procurement processes for security and cleaning services. According to the group, they were denied a fair opportunity to secure employment within these sectors. Fyp emalahleni witbanknews #witbanktiktok

This peaceful demonstration was held under the wings of Mpumalanga Arising Hope NPO.

The community liaison officer, Witness Mabila, was given a memorandum and said he would round up with the mall management and provide feedback to the group by no later than Tuesday.

“We just need fair opportunities,” the demonstrators said.

There was no response from the mall’s management.
