Help Moody checkmate his way to the championships

Chess star Devon Moody aims to become a Grandmaster after competing in the upcoming provincial championship in December.

A young chess star from the City of Coal is aiming for the highest title in chess – grandmaster – but first needs community support to reach the provincial finals.

Devon Moody, a learner at Bonginsimbi Secondary School, has been selected to represent Mpumalanga at the Mzansi Inter-Provincial Youth Chess Championship in Bloemfontein from December 13 to 19.

“I was very excited when I received the news. Representing my province means a lot to me,” said Devon. “It is not just about playing chess for myself, but carrying the name of Mpumalanga with pride and showing what young chess players from our province can achieve.”

Funding hurdle puts trip at risk

Despite his achievement, his journey to the championships is at risk due to financial constraints.

The young player needs to raise funds to cover transport, accommodation, registration fees, and uniform costs.

His journey has not been easy, but he credits support from his school for keeping him going.

“My school teachers were really supportive. They would motivate me and I would also challenge them. My schoolmates were also cheerful and I really appreciate that,” he said.

Big ambitions on and off the board

Devon discovered his love for chess at a young age and now wants to inspire other learners to follow their passion, even in non-traditional sports.

“The message I wish to send out is to figure out what you want to do. Whether it is chess, boxing, soccer, or any non-traditional sport, if you love it, do it. Don’t let friends tell you otherwise. Just put in time and focus, then you will see you will go far,” he advised.

While many teenagers are still figuring out their future, Devon has a clear vision for his career.

“My long-term goal is to become a chess grandmaster, compete in other countries, and travel the world through chess. My future after Grade 12 is to go to university and study architecture.”

Devon is appealing to the community, local businesses, mining companies, and sponsors to help make his dream a reality.
