SAPS urge caution following armed robbery incident involving truck driver near Paxton Road
Witbank SAPS acting Station Commander, Colonel Emmarancia Kgosana, has strongly warned truck drivers to be cautious when approached by unknown individuals on the road, as she referred to it as a new modus operandi.
The Witbank SAPS is urging truck drivers to remain vigilant following a recent incident in which a man was forced at gunpoint to transfer oil from his truck into a suspect’s vehicle near Paxton Road, eMalahleni.
The incident occurred on November 10.
According to the police, the man was driving a truck with his colleague when they were stopped by what they believe is a mine bakkie occupied by two men who appeared to be requesting assistance.
While engaging with them, the men allegedly pointed firearms at the victims and instructed the one driving to follow them to a nearby dumping site.
Upon arrival, a truck resembling a water bowser approached.
The robbers then forced the man to pump oil from his truck into theirs. After the oil was transferred, the robbers took the victims’ phones before fleeing the scene.
The suspects are currently unknown but may be identifiable.
SAPS reminds all truck drivers and logistics personnel to exercise extreme caution when approached by unknown individuals, especially in isolated or poorly monitored areas. Criminals may use deceptive tactics to gain access to cargo or personal belongings.
“We urge all truck drivers to avoid stopping for anyone who appears suspicious or who is not in a clearly marked and verified company vehicle. Always inform your control room or supervisor before stopping to assist anyone, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” said Kgosana.
SAPS is actively investigating the matter and urges anyone with information that could assist in identifying the suspects to come forward.
