This Friday, eMalahleni stands against gender-based violence in purple and black
The G20 Women’s shutdown is here, and the community is called to stand together against gender-based violence and femicide.
eMalahleni is gearing up for one of its most powerful community actions yet, and you are invited to stand up, show up, and speak out.
On Friday, November 21, residents from all corners of the city will unite as part of the national G20 Women’s Shutdown, a movement calling for urgent action against gender-based violence and femicide.
Organisers are calling on every resident to come out in numbers and make their voices impossible to ignore.
The central gathering takes place at King George Park, Central Business District, starting at 11:00.
Attendees are encouraged to wear purple T-shirts and black trousers to create a striking visual display of solidarity.
At 12:00, the entire crowd will participate in a 15-minute citywide standstill, honouring survivors and remembering those lost to GBV.
Earlier in the morning, students and staff at NGI New Bridge are calling on the public to join them from 08:00, dressed in black.
Participants will paint purple hearts with personal messages and then form a 30-minute human line along OR Tambo Avenue at 09:00, a bold display of unity.
For those closer to town, an additional meeting spot will be available at the park opposite the long-distance taxi rank at 11:00.
Residents are urged to spread the word, invite friends, bring colleagues, and help fill the streets with purple, black, and the power of community unity.
