Hands-on workshop teaches communities how to respond to overdoses

Kakarambha Foundation and SANAC Civil Society Forum strengthen overdose prevention in Nkangala.

The Kakarambha Foundation and the SANAC Civil Society Forum, in partnership with the Nkangala District Municipality, hosted a drug overdose awareness and response training workshop as part of a growing campaign to improve harm reduction services in local communities.

The capacity-building session on November 21 brought together residents, community leaders, health workers and civil society stakeholders for practical, hands-on training focused on recognising and responding to overdose incidents.

According to programme facilitators, the workshop aimed to equip community members with life-saving skills, including how to identify early signs of overdose, administer first-line interventions, and connect individuals to essential support services.

“The goal is to empower communities with practical tools to save lives,” one of the organisers, Thando Masango, said. “Strengthening local capacity is critical in reducing preventable deaths and supporting people affected by substance use.”
