SA hockey receives ‘wake-up call’

South Africa’s men’s hockey captain, Austin Smith, believes his team has received a ‘wake-up call’ after they suffered two heavy defeats in their opening matches of the World Cup in Holland.

The Proteas are still without any points in their Group B encounter, having gone down to Germany 4-0 and 5-0 to New Zealand.

Smith, who is one of the few experienced players in a squad filled with amateurs, feels their inexperience has showed in their two matches.

“We knew the reality of playing at the World Cup, and with the level that we’re at here; we knew it was possible for something like this to happen. We’ve had two disappointing results, but we’re going to do all we can to get a positive result in the matches still left to play,” he said.

Smith says adjusting to playing at an international level is something that cannot be taught.

“It’s hard to explain to the guys what the level is going to be like because as a player, you have an idea in your head. But I certainly think for some of the guys it’s been a wake-up call, because the level has been really high here,” he concluded.
