Springbok Women beat Nomads

The Springbok Women claimed a second victory over the Nomads, the women's rugby equivalent of the Barbarians, when they defeated the select team 32-24 at the Wasps Football Club in London on Tuesday.

The second match proved to be a tighter affair after the Springboks had won the first clash by 20 points on Saturday.

Lawrence Sephaka’s side outscored the Nomads by six tries to four having conceded an early try with prop Elisha Dee going over for the Nomads.

The Springboks responded well with Phumeza Gadu and then Rachelle Geldenhuys scoring tries. Nwabisa Ngxatu then added a third but Tess Forburg pulled one try back for the Nomads to reduce South Africa’s lead to 15-12 at half time.

The Springboks then scored an early try through centre Veroeshka Grain before Zoe Saynor responded for the Nomads.

Sephaka’s side were only three points ahead with 17 minutes left on the clock but managed to edge ahead yet again with Vuyolwethu Vazi going over the whitewash.

The Nomads again fought back through a try by Lisa Campbell but stand-in captain Lamla Momoti sealed the 32-24 victory with two minutes left.

The Springbok Women will travel to Paris on Wednesday morning to prepare for Friday’s Test against the Rugby World Cup hosts in Marcoussis, which marks the final match on their Rugby World Cup warm-up tour.
