Mpumalanga motorists warned to exercise extreme caution as snow hits N11, N3
Traffic officers remain on high alert as poor visibility, rain and snowfall affect major routes across the province.
Motorists in Mpumalanga have been urged to exercise extreme caution as ongoing rainfall creates hazardous driving conditions across the province.
The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, has called on motorists to remain on high alert when travelling in wet weather.
Wet and icy conditions can make tarred roads slippery and difficult to navigate, while poor visibility, particularly at night, increases the risk of crashes.
Motorists have been advised to avoid excessive speed, switch on their headlights to improve visibility, maintain a safe following distance and, where possible, delay or postpone non-essential journeys.
Drivers are also warned against attempting to cross low-lying bridges and flooded areas.
Snow and mist affect key routes
Snowfall has been reported on the N11 towards Volksrust and on the N3 in the province towards KZN. Misty conditions have also been reported on some roads during the night and early morning.
No major crashes have been reported so far.
However, traffic law enforcement officers and emergency personnel remain on high alert and are closely monitoring road conditions.
Macie urged motorists to adjust their driving according to the prevailing weather conditions and remain informed before and during their journeys.
“Let us be on high alert and adjust our driving in line with these adverse conditions to stay out of danger,” Macie said. “We must monitor conditions and remain updated, especially when travelling.”
