Founded in 1921, Kearsney College is one of the country’s top independent traditional boys’ high schools, renowned for its balance and all-round excellence. Kearsney provides a world-class education, focusing on developing well-rounded boys and preparing them for future success.
Kearsney’s beautiful 125-acre estate is located in Botha’s Hill, on the edge of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, midway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and a thirty-minute drive from either city.
Academic excellence
Academics are Kearsney’s number one priority and the College has an outstanding track record of academic excellence. Kearsney has a renowned Maths and Science Excellence Programme and for eleven consecutive years Kearsney’s Maths and Science distinction rates have been approximately double the average distinction rates of all the independent IEB schools in the country.

Sport
Kearsney has a proud track record of sporting excellence, consistently producing provincial and national sportsmen across the codes. Kearsney pupils enjoy world-class facilities, including an indoor SportZone that houses seven indoor cricket nets with four bowling machines, two basketball courts, an indoor hockey/soccer pitch, two swimming pools and 280m2 weights gymnasium. The High-Performance Sports Programme offers the expertise of a biokineticist, sports scientist, dietician and physiotherapists, and personalised training programmes are developed to help each boy reach his potential.
Kearsney’s spacious campus boasts seven sports fields, a floodlit, water-based hockey Astroturf, six tennis courts, four squash courts and a mountain bike track through our conservancy. Kearsney believes that sports are an important part of a healthy lifestyle and a balanced education and there are fourteen sporting codes for the boys to enjoy.

Culture
Kearsney is famous for its balance and the College has a large and vibrant cultural programme, including the annual Culture@Kearsney showcase for all the arts. The Kearsney College Choir is world-renowned and performs on famous stages around the world. The choir will be competing and performing in Vienna in 2022 and at the World Choir Games in New Zealand in 2024. The Kearsney College Choir is currently ranked 24th in the Top 10000 choirs in the world by the international organisation Interkultur. The Choir earned two gold medals and one silver at the last World Choir Games in 2018 and has won 15 gold medals and seven silvers at the World Choir Games since 2000, making it the second-most decorated choir in the history of the World Choir Games, the largest choir competition in the world. They have been crowned world champions on four occasions.
Flexible boarding
Kearsney offers both weekly and termly boarding, as well as a day scholar option. About 75% of the pupils are boarders. Transport is provided on Monday mornings for returning boarders from Pietermaritzburg, Umhlanga, Ballito and Zululand (pick up points in Richards Bay and Mtunzini).
