Shock double infant rape report

Two-month and six month-old infants brought in to Ngwelezane Rape Centre for treatment

THE Zululand Observer was unable to confirm reports that on Friday a two-month-old and a six-month-old infant had been raped and were brought in from Dondotha to the Ngwelezane Rape Centre.

It could also not be ascertained if any suspects had been arrested.

Public Relations Officer of Ngwelezana Hospital, Tobias Gumede was not able to confirm these reports, which were gained from a reliable source in the medical profession, and refrained from making any comments regarding the condition of the infants.

Empangeni SAP Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose stated that the overall statistics for rape which are reported in Zululand cannot be given out unless otherwise instructed by Minister of Police Nathi Mthetwa.

However, between Friday and Saturday night three rapes were reported in the uMhlathuze areas of Nseleni, Ngwelezane and Mevamhlophe, with two suspects having been arrested.

According to a study conducted by Interpol, it is estimated that a rape occurs every 17 seconds in South Africa.
