A SECURITY officer on duty at the Richards Bay Caravan Park was taken off guard when he discovered skull bones in a dune close to the camping grounds at 10.30am on Tuesday.
He reported the peculiar sighting to the Richards Bay SAPS and forensic experts from the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) were deployed to investigate the scene.
According to the Richards Bay SAPS, two sets of skulls suspected to be human were photographed, carefully removed from the sand and transported to the Richards Bay Mortuary.
Owing to the brittleness of the bones, police believe they could be more than 10 years old.
The skulls will be sent for examination and DNA analyses at the Pretoria Forensic Science Laboratory to ascertain more detailed and precise facts about the bone tissue.
