Recycle to stop wasteful littering

Richards Bay's recycling guru shows how easy it is to go green and clean

AFTER numerous outcries from the public about bottles and other renewable refuse brazenly dumped around town, recycling experts are urging community members to do their bit for a cleaner Zululand.

According to Vino Molayan, who established local business Going Green Recycling last year, separating and discarding reusable items in Richards Bay is easier than most residents realise.

‘Many people think recycling is a ‘hassle’, but once you start the practice it becomes an effortless habit with great long-term benefits,’ says Vino.

‘You can start by using only two bins at home.

‘The one should be for glass, plastics and cans and the other for food and non-recyclables.

‘At the workplace or at schools, it’s always great to have a third container for paper products like white office paper, newspaper, magazines and cardboard boxes.’

Local drop-off points

All recycled products can be dropped off at the Alton Recycling and Resource Centre on Alumina Allee.

There are also residential drop-off points at Essenwood Spar and in front of the Meerensee bus depot on Angler’s Rod.

‘I’m in discussions with the municipality for more of these zones in other Richards Bay suburbs like Brackenham and Birdswood,’ says Vino.

‘Most homes, complexes and businesses are paying high municipal rates because they have numerous bins, so they can also profit from recycling by reducing the costs of only putting food and non-recyclables in their bins.

‘If there are residents or businesses who have sorted a lot of recyclables, I will gladly come collect them – as long as everyone starts the process!’
