US support to fight poaching

ADDING to the rhino anti-poaching fight, United States (US) Consul General in Durban, Taylor Ruggles, and a team of US specialists will meet with KZN Wildlife CEO Dr Bandile Mkhize this week to discuss how to spend money allocated to support the cause.

Ruggles visited Richards Bay last week, accompanied by a consulate team, to meet with Americans living in this region.

He said in June President Barack Obama pledged R3–million to support anti-poaching initiatives in South Africa and the engagement sessions this week will focus on better understanding the problem and identifying ways in which the US can assist with resources and information.

‘This province is known for its conservation and the area north of this province has many game reserves. We need to help combat the poaching problem,’ Ruggles said.

During his visit he also highlighted the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), a US government programme inviting young African leaders to apply to go to the United States as Washington Fellows.

Starting next year, this programme will bring over 500 young leaders to the United States each year for leadership training and mentoring.

‘Obama recognises that the next generation of leaders must be capacitated and equipped and this is a great opportunity for young leaders who are active in their community and dedicated to making a difference in their country.

‘At least 10% of the 500 will be from South Africa,’ he said.
