Shoot-out in uMkhuze

Road blocks have been set up to search for the two suspected poachers.

A SUSPECTED rhino poacher was shot and later died, after a skirmish between field rangers and three men at uMkhuze Game Reserve last night.

Armed contact ensued between suspected rhino poachers and uMkhuze rangers on the western boundary of the reserve.

One poacher was wounded and apprehended.

The search for two other poachers continued throughout the night, but yielded nothing.

Stopper groups and roadblocks were set up in the area following the incident.

The wounded man was reported to have died this morning.

A weapon recovered at the scene was identified as being a .375 calibre rifle with silencer, but without sights.

An axe was also recovered.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife deployed a helicopter today to search for a carcass to ascertain whether the poachers did perhaps kill a rhino prior to the shoot-out.
