Rhino death toll up to 376

The latest national rhino poaching stats have been released.

THE national rhino death toll so far this year is standing at 376 animals, with 245 from the Kruger National Park poached.

KZN has the third highest figure with 37 killed up to Thursday last week.

At the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife game auction on Wednesday, CEO Dr Bandile Mkhize pleaded with private rhino owners to act responsibly and have safety measures in place to protect their rhino.

The Kruger Park is becoming more difficult for poachers and they are now moving into KZN, especially the private reserves.

These activities are especially occurring at full moon, and rangers and owners need to be vigilant.

Of the 37 killed to date in KZN, 33 were white rhinos and four black.

Ezemvelo reserves have lost 25 animals, while private and community conservation areas have recorded 12 animals killed.

Limpopo has the second most rhinos killed this year (39).

North West and Mpumalanga has reported 26 and 12 deaths respectively, Gauteng three, Eastern Cape nine, Free State four and Western Cape one.

A hundred-and-six people have been arrested nationally for rhino poaching this year, 26 in KZN.
