Overalls ban on City dress code
Establishing a dress code enables councillors and employees to project a professional, business-like image

THE City of uMhlathuze is in the process of adopting a dress code policy for its Council and Committee meetings.
Definitely out are see-through clothes, bathing suits, ‘boob dresses’, ‘muscle shirts’, undergarments worn as outer garments, and overalls – red or any other colour.
The matter was raised in an Exco item on Tuesday, ‘with hopes of bringing dignity to the council chambers’, but also taking into account traditional attire and religious beliefs.
According to the item, ‘the municipality’s objective, in establishing a dress code, is to enable councillors and employees to project a professional, business-like image while experiencing the advantage of more casual and relaxed clothing’.
The policy also extends to visitors: ‘Members of the community attending Council or any of its Committee meetings shall be dressed in smart casual, traditional wear and not put on anything that reflects political affiliation or electioneering’.
The Speaker or Committee Chairpersons will order security to remove any person who is not appropriately dressed.
Also deemed as ‘unacceptable clothing’ are:
• Hard hats
• Torn, faded or low-cut jeans
• Sportswear
• T-shirts
• Political regalia
• Hiking or military style boots
• Skin-tight pants
• Sweat shirts and joggers
• Bare feet
• Aprons
• Extreme mini-skirts and dresses (above the knee).
