Insanity in the emergency lane

The ‘car’ still managed to keep going at an even speed.

‘AT first I thought it was a wreck left at the side of the road, but as I got closer I saw it was moving steadily along at about 80km/h.’

Richards Bay resident Lourens Basson is still shaking his head in disbelief after seeing a rusted, smashed car trundling down the emergency lane of the N2 between KwaMbonambi and Mtubatuba on Monday afternoon.

‘This wasn’t an accident waiting to happen – it had happened some time ago!

‘Apart from the tyres that looked to be in fairly good condition, the rest of the vehicle would have failed a roadworthy test on dozens of counts.’

Missing bumpers and windows and a fair amount of bodywork, with twisted remains of doors miraculously defying gravity and the crumpled roof showing all the signs of serious collision contact, the ‘car’ still managed to keep going at an even speed.

And not a traffic cop in sight.
