CAUTION: Puffer fish alert

All species of Puffer fish are considered toxic - some even produce venom that could be fatal.

REPORTS are being received of Puffer fish (Blowfish) being washed up along the north coast from the Ballito area to Richards Bay.

It is presumed the cause is a rapid change in water temperature.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife advises the public to dispose of them by burial – deep enough that dogs cannot retrive them.

The public is also warned not to handle them unless wearing gloves, and to avoid contact with the skin.

All species of Puffer fish are considered toxic – some even produce venom that could be fatal.

Locals are asked to report any significant sighting to Ezemvelo District Conservation Manager, Frans Mthembu on 083 559 2849.
