Inquest into port drown tragedy

The car had reportedly entered the water in first gear ‘at some speed’

POLICE are investigating the circumstances in which a harbour contractor died when his car plunged over the quayside at dawn on Thursday.

Working in fairly clean water, SAPS divers soon recovered the body Mr KP Qoma (37) inside his blue Peugeot 206 at a depth of about 15m.

The car had reportedly entered the water in first gear ‘at some speed’ and ended about 20m from where it left the quayside at the corner of berth 701 and 609.

The victim was not a Transnet Port Terminals employee and exact details of how the incident occurred will be determined during the official inquest.

The investigation docket has been handed to detectives at the Richards Bay Police Station.
