State of the art library for Ndumo community

The library has been strategically positioned to benefit the pupils in the area, and already has over 170 registered members.

THE KZN Arts and Culture MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, accompanied by members of the Provincial Cabinet visited Ndumo Library, Jozini Municipality on Wednesday.

The construction of the facility forms part of provincial government’s Inkululeko Development Project.

The Department spent over R17.2-million on the construction of this facility; which excludes computers and library material.

The library which opened its doors to the public in April, has been strategically positioned to benefit the pupils in the area, and already has over 170 registered members.

The facility has early childhood development programmes, to keep children engaged while their parents make use of the available resources.

It also offers gaming facilities to unemployed youth.

The library boasts free internet access as well as printing and scanning services facilitated by a cyber cadet, which allows job seekers to use the facility to write their curriculum vitae and search for job opportunities.

There is also project materials for primary and high school scholars as well as tertiary material for distance learning.

The Department has ensured there are adequate studying areas for school and tertiary going youth as well as adults still pursuing their studies.

The construction of this library is in line with the outcomes set out in the National Development Plan, which includes reducing illiteracy, improving access to information, making internet available to all and contributing to job creation.

This project created over 50 jobs for the locals.

It is one of 44 libraries in the province set to benefit from the Mzansi Libraries Online Project, a national Arts and Culture initiative under the National Library of South Africa.

MEC appeals to community
Congratulating the Ndumo community, Sithole-Moloi said, ‘We urge communities to work with us to keep the building, learning material and equipment safe, as it will only benefit them and their children if properly cared for.

‘We discourage vandalism of property as it reverses gains made in improving the lives of the people in this province.

These facilities are there to change lives, and we will continue to roll out such programmes to promote access to information.’
