Gogo Mcambi receives a little Madiba magic
Gogo Mcambi is now all smiles in her beautiful home of which she is so proud.

THE Africa Centre for Population Health celebrated Mandela Day by responding to a charitable call from the grandchildren of Gogo Bongisiwe Mankwanyana Mcambi (63) of Machibini Reserve, Mtubatuba on the 15 July.
After assessing the sad life circumstances of Gogo Mcambi, who out of her meagre pension grant has to support her four grandchildren and her disabled son, the facilities team at Africa Centre saw it fitting to pledge more than just 67 minutes by renovating two of the gogo’s houses and building a temporary structure to serve as cooking quarters for her family.
After three days spent on wall plastering, floor tiling, window repairing by the dedicated facilities team, Gogo Mcambi is now all smiles in her beautiful home of which she is so proud.
Other staff members joined hands by cleaning the houses and the yard.
Donations from Africa Centre staff comprised beds, bedding, a fridge, furniture, toys, clothes and groceries for this much deserving family.
‘We couldn’t just turn a blind eye, we knew with the limited resources we have, we could do something to bring a smile to this family,’ said African Centre Facilities Manager, Rene Stroebel.
‘I am at a loss for words, Africa Centre has drastically changed my life for the better, I now have a comfortable home and new furniture. My grandchildren will have enough to eat for sometime,’ said a jubilant Gogo Mcambi.
The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) who organised the Mandela Day initiative were pleased with the response.
‘Nelson Mandela once said, ‘It always seems impossible, until it’s done’,’ said the ecstatic CEU coordinator Ncengi Mthethwa, ‘Africa Centre and the community proved today that it can be done.’
