UPDATE: Lake tests still awaited
The number of fish that died possibly runs into the thousands

WHILE water samples and toxology tests on dead fish are still awaited, Lake Mzingazi is now showing a distinct red colour, perhaps indicating a high algae content.
Varies species of fish, including large Spotted grunter, bream and Pickhandle barracuda were first found floating on the lake’s surface over the weekend.
Initial speculation indicated death through oxygen deprivation, possibly linked to a sudden inflow of cold, fresh rainwater into the lake.
With some of the best local July rains on record, the lake rose quickly from a very low level with high salinity owing to salt water ingress, to its present 41% capacity.
