THE latest addition to the NSRI Station 19 fleet was officially blessed and named at a function held at the Richards Bay base on Wednesday evening.
‘Spirit of Round Table II’, better known as Sport II, an 8.5m semi rigid fast response vessel, is a welcome addition alongside another recent acquisition, ‘Grindrod Rescue’ (4.7m) and the flagship ‘Spirit of Richards Bay’ (12m).
After a short introduction in which the handover was likened to a life-saving organ donation, ‘donor’ representative Martin van der Linde, Chairman of Richards Bay Round Table did the honours as champagne was poured over the sides of the boat.
The vessel’s kill switch was then handed over for ‘safe keeping’ to NSRI Chairman of Operations Board, Eddie Noyons who in turn, passed it on to Station Commander Dorian Robertson.
Sport II has already been on the water in trials and on a genuine rescue, and has already proved its worth as an asset to the station.
