Teenage boy in court for rape and murder

The teen was arrested two days after the girl's body was found

A 17-year-old boy accused of the rape and murder of a Grade 5 Dokodweni pupil, Amanda Mthembu, appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The teenager was arrested last Wednesday by Gingindlovu police following a tip-off.

He was remanded in police custody pending further investigation and is expected to reappear this Friday for a formal bail application.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said the naked body of the girl was found by Gingindlovu police and the Umhlali K9 Unit in a sugar cane field in the Dokodweni Reserve.

‘It appears she was strangled to death. Charges of murder and rape were opened at the Gingindlovu police station for investigation. She was reported missing on Sunday, 14 June,’ Mdlalose said.
