Lourens wins provincial welding competition

UMFOLOZI TVET College staff and students are brimming with pride after the institution scooped the first prize at the World Skills South Africa (WSSA) welding skills provincial competition last Thursday.

This after Lourens Wilson, a student at the college, claimed the top honours.

During the competition, Lourens thrived in various tasks such as working on carbon steel pipes, carbon steel plates vertical and horizontal.

He also excelled in other tasks such as aluminium assembly and stainless steel assembly.

‘It was a very interesting experience for me. The competition was tough and I was nervous from start to finish, but I am very excited and thankful that I get to move forward in the competition,’ Wilson said.

‘The provincial competition included students from all over the province and all winners will compete nationally and hopefully represent South Africa in Shanghai next year where more than 1 300 competitors from 60 world skills member countries will compete in 56 skills.

Acting College Principal, Elsie duToit, applauded all the participants for their hard work and preparations for the competition and congratulated Lourens on his achievement.
