During the same period last year, the dam was at 31.90% of its full capacity.
Rainfall in the first week of October showed a steady increase, with levels reaching 51.47%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) last week expressed concern about the continued decrease in water levels at the province’s dams.
To mitigate water supply challenges for KZN communities, DWS spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the department is implementing long-term measures in the form of water infrastructure projects.
‘Most communities in the uMkhanyakude district and surrounds have been severely affected by water shortages, resulting in protests.
‘We have been working tirelessly to implement the Skhemelele, Mtikini and Tembe water supply projects.’
He added the Shemula bulk water project in uMkhanyakude is currently undergoing a major upgrade to offset increasing pressure because of excessive water losses and increased demand.
