Zululand NPO celebrates a decade of growth

THE I Learn to Live – Ngifundela Ukuphila non-profit organisation celebrated a decade of creativity and growth last weekend.

The Empangeni organisation was founded by Ashling McCarthy in response to the large number of rural school leavers she met while volunteering with Izulu Orphan Projects.

McCarthy said she was dismayed by the number of school leavers she engaged with who had a matric certificate, but no clue where to go from there.

As a result, the organisation began by financially supporting three students to attend Richtek College and provided mentorship.

McCarthy quickly realised the youth would benefit from much earlier intervention in their lives, and the organisation moved into a local high school offering life and soft skills classes.

Since 2014, the organisation has widened its support to include primary school children, offering an after-school programme and holiday clubs.

Their main focus is to encourage children to be curious, to think more broadly about future careers, and become equipped in the use of technology, starting with basic computers and moving on to coding.

Children are encouraged to explore various programmes, such as 3D and animation software, which promotes problem solving, as well as exposing them to alternative careers.

I Learn to Live also partners with local primary schools, one of which implemented the Gateway into Reading programme, which teaches foundational reading to Grade 1-4 learners.

In addition, it offers teacher training on technology use in the classroom and educates teachers on free online resources available to help improve subject knowledge.

Working collaboratively with Izulu Orphan Projects and donors such as the Rotary Club of Empangeni, has enabled growth in a supportive environment.
