Heavy weather temporarily closes Port of Richards Bay

Strong winds and heavy rains over the past two days have forced the Port of Richards Bay to suspend operations.

Strong winds and heavy rains over the past two days have forced the Port of Richards Bay to suspend operations.

Wind speeds reaching 42 knots caused high sea swells of seven metres, impacting port activities.

Operations were suspended on Thursday to protect employees and port users.

‘In such conditions, there was poor visibility, which is critical to navigation.

‘The port remains committed to real-time safety and efficient service to our customers. However, we must acknowledge that as part of this process, the safety of all port users and employees remains critical to Transnet National Ports Authority,’ said Harbour Master, Gugu Dube.

‘We are continuously monitoring the weather conditions to ensure safe and efficient operations.

‘The Harbour Master will communicate any port service impact as we navigate through such difficult weather patterns.’
