Marginal recovery in vehicle sales

SA’s new vehicle industry continued on its path of moderate recovery in May.

According to Naamsa, 38 337 vehicles were sold last month – a 7.6% gain over April.

It’s not fair to compare the figures to May last year, as the country was then in lockdown Level 4, but for what it’s worth, the market grew by 197.8% year-on-year.

Light commercial vehicles led the year-on-year growth, at 288.5%, while passenger cars saw a 169% gain.

So how did the car makers doing business in the SA market fare last month?

Well, since Naamsa stopped giving a monthly breakdown of each manufacturer’s respective models registered, we can only report on brands’ total number of sales across their respective line-ups and thus establish the brands which sold the most vehicles in a specific month.

In May, Toyota came out tops as it managed to convince 9 882 buyers to buy from the esteemed Japanese brand.
VW was second with 5 579 vehicles reported as sold.

In third place was the Ford Motor Company which managed to push 2 910 new vehicles into the local market.

Fourth place went to Hyundai with a total of 2 836 new vehicles on the road, while fifth place, and surely the most commendable performance of May, went to Suzuki.

2 034 Suzukis found new homes, with the relatively small brand outperforming many much older and established brands in the SA market.

Other brands which also did quite well in May were Haval in seventh position (1 789 units sold), Kia in the ninth spot (1 521 units sold) and Renault in number 10 (1 511 units sold).

For the rest, the struggle is real…
