The end of water woes in Nongoma

The water project was launched in 2019 by Zululand District Municipality

For the first time in history, Nongoma residents have access to clean, running water from their taps which were installed into every home last Wednesday.

The water project was launched in 2019 by Zululand District Municipality, with residents from Sgangeni, Duma, Ntanzi and Sgodiphola the first beneficiaries.

This follows the completion of a water purification plant and reservoir which supply water to these communities.

Busisiwe Shobede, one of the beneficiaries, said she used to travel long distances to fetch water from the nearby river.

‘When all our nearby rivers went dry, the municipality started supplying us with water using water tankers,’ said Shobede.

‘This was a danger for our children as they had to cross the busy road to get to the water tanker. We are glad our children are safe and we don’t have to rush to queue to get water.’

District Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi said he was excited about the completion of this water project. ‘We are very happy to see our communities getting water in a dignified way,’ he said.

‘In 2019, we started building a water reservoir so we could distribute water to our communities.’

He said they have tabled the 2021/22 budget of R1.174-billion to address other community challenges.
