KZN to receive Covid-19 vaccines for teachers on Wednesday

Districts that have finished the first phase earlier will continue to the second phase of the vaccination

THE KZN Department of Health will on Wednesday receive 57 000 Covid-19 vaccines for the second phase of the educators programme.

This comes as the Department of Education in the province announced on Sunday that it was experiencing a shortage of doses, delaying the vaccination of teachers and other school staff in uMkhanyakude, eThekwini, Pinetown and Umlazi.

For the first leg of the educators vaccination programme, the department had received 69 000 doses which were distributed among the districts.

‘Some districts were faster than the others as they finished their phase one programme quicker than others.

‘Those districts which have not yet finished their doses for the first phase are still on schedule and will finish in the next two days or so,’ said

Department of Health spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane.

Districts that have finished the first phase earlier will continue to the second phase of the vaccination.

Vaccination sites for educators in the King Cetshwayo district have been set up at Dlangezwa High School, Melmoth community hall and Nkandla Hospital.

‘We are requesting educators to check with their authorities first before coming for their jabs,’ said Hlongwane.

He has, however, appealed to those who have been vaccinated, to continue adhering to non-pharmaceutical health protocols of wearing masks, washing hands or sanitising, social distancing and avoiding mass gatherings, and staying at home where possible.
