Can tree fundraiser to help needy families

Many fun activities are lined up to keep community members entertained, such as an auction, music, and a jumping castle for the children.

RICHARDS Bay charity organisation Walk in Faith is hosting a fun and festive fundraiser on Saturday in Meerensee where members of the public can bring along canned food to build a Christmas tree to help feed needy families.

The event will be held at KNK Curries at the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront from 9am, and everyone is invited to bring along a can of vegetables, baked beans, tinned fish or corn meat to erect the tallest can tree.

Many fun activities are lined up to keep community members entertained, such as an auction, music, and a jumping castle for the children.

According to founder Merinda Ackerman, the canned food collection drive will go towards providing food hampers to families in need over the festive season.

‘We have about 120 to 150 families in need of food hampers or buckets, and we appeal for donations to meet this target.

‘As some of the children from these families receive meals at school through our weekly lunch pack distributions or at their school’s food nutrition programme, the families will now be under pressure to provide these extra meals during the holiday break.

‘The food hampers will offer relief to these families who have difficulty in buying groceries after they have paid for their basic needs like rent, and work transport.’
