Urgent call for blood donations

Blood stock levels countrywide have been at a critical level since the beginning of December, with only 2.4 days' supply available.

BLOOD stock levels countrywide have been at a critical level since the beginning of December, with only 2.4 days’ supply available.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) aims to have at least a five-day stock level on hand to sustain the country’s need.

This is of particular concern because there is usually an increase in need for lifesaving blood transfusions over the busy festive season.

Existing and new donors are urged to visit their nearest blood donor centre during the festive period to help boost the dwindling stocks.

With limited access to mobile blood drive venues owing to Covid-19, and the closure of schools and universities, the blood service’s ability to reach its required 3 500 blood donations a day is highly constrained.

In an attempt to increase blood stocks and continue saving lives, SANBS in KZN will operate extended hours each day.

Donor centres are still adhering to strict Covid-19 infection prevention protocols to ensure the safety of both donors and staff members.

Blood is essential all year round, and SANBS depends on regular donors to keep blood stocks at optimal levels to help meet the demand.

Visit the Richards Bay SANBS donor centre at Boardwalk Inkwazi.
